- Staff Leadership and Development:
- Allocates nursing staff to ensure appropriate patient-to-nurse ratios, considering patient acuity levels and staff expertise.
- Supervises nursing staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
- Mentors and supports staff in their professional development.
- Patient Care Management:
- Monitors and enforces adherence to established nursing protocols, policies, and standards to ensure high-quality patient care.
- Tracks and evaluates patient care outcomes, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
- Ensures high-quality patient care by monitoring clinical outcomes and implementing evidence-based practices.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and review care plans.
- Addresses patient and family concerns, ensuring satisfaction and safety.
- Educates patients and their families about health conditions, treatments, and preventive measures.
- Operational Oversight:
- Oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the nursing unit, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery based on the developed care plan and ensuring it is aligned with the needs of the patients and the organization’s goal.
- Manages the nursing unit’s daily operations, including staffing levels and patient flow. Optimizes patient care, staff productivity, resource allocation, and operational efficiency.
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Quality Improvement:
- Identifies potential risks to patient safety and implements measures to mitigate them, including staff education and environmental safety checks.
- Analyzes patient care data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Implements changes based on quality improvement findings and participates in accreditation processes.
- Leads initiatives to improve patient care quality, safety, and strategies that align with organizational goals and standards.
- Conduct root cause analysis for any issue that arises in the unit and report accordingly.
- Crisis Management:
- Organizes and leads regular crisis simulation drills for nursing staff, including fire drills, code responses, mass casualty events, and other emergency scenarios.
- Respond to emergencies, coordinate appropriate responses, and act as the primary leader during crises, directing nursing staff, coordinating with other departments, and making rapid, informed decisions to manage situations.
- Develop and implement policies for crisis intervention and disaster preparedness, including the availability of medical supplies, emergency kits, and equipment.
- Patient Experience:
- Leads initiatives to improve patient satisfaction and experience, responding to patient and family concerns and feedback.
- Fosters effective communication between nursing staff, patients, and their families to ensure patient needs and expectations are met.
- Acts as a patient advocate, ensuring those patients’ rights are respected, and their voices are heard in care decisions.
- Policy development:
- Leads the development of new nursing policies and procedures, ensuring they are based on the latest evidence, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Regularly reviews and updates existing nursing policies and procedures to reflect changes in healthcare standards, technology, and clinical practices.
- Collaborates with clinical and administrative leaders, including nursing staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, to gather input and ensure comprehensive and practical policies.
- Budgeting:
- Manages the unit’s budget for patient care services, ensuring the efficient use of resources while maintaining quality care.
- Develops and manages staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and optimal patient care delivery while maintaining an efficient process and ensuring that staff attendance is accurate and monitored.
- Manages inventory related to medicines, equipment, and supplies.
- Education and training:
- Conducts needs assessments to determine educational requirements based on patient care trends, new technologies, and staff feedback in collaboration with the Nursing Professional Development Team.
- Oversees the orientation process for new hires and RN residents, ensuring they are well-integrated into the team and familiar with unit protocols. Supports the clinical training of students and interns and ensures the appropriate preceptorship program in the unit.
- Maintains accurate records of all training activities, certifications, and competencies, ensuring all staff meet mandatory training requirements.
- Provides ongoing education and professional development opportunities for nursing staff.
- Problem Solving:
- communicate the problem, propose solutions and implementation plan to all relevant stakeholders, ensuring buy-in and cooperation.
- Addresses and resolve conflicts among staff members promptly and effectively, maintaining a harmonious work environment.
- Addresses staffing issues, patient complaints, and other operational challenges while demonstrating compassionate communication skills.
- Research and innovation – Evidence-based practices.
- Participate and lead nursing research and apply evidence-based practices to improve patient care.
- Stay informed about the latest trends and innovations in healthcare and nursing, integrating relevant findings into clinical practices.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Facilitates clear and consistent communication within the nursing team and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care delivery.
- Serves as a liaison between nursing staff and upper management. Oversees and assures that committees’ or councils’ recommendations are implemented at the unit resource level.
- Participates in departmental and organizational meetings to contribute to strategic planning.
- Demonstrates compassionate communication skills while providing support and care to the patients and staff.

- Experience:
- 5 – 7 years of nursing experience within a hospital setting. Must have succession planning and career ladder promotion for internal candidates. External applicants are required to have proven experience in a nursing leadership role.
